CSDR Boys Varsity Basketball Didn’t Finish Strong
By the end of the first quarter, CSDR led 11-6. The Cubs played great defense and kept the tempo going in the second quarter, commanding a 26-17 lead at halftime. But Academy for Academic Excellence (AAE) came back in the third quarter with a 20-11 run which caused the game to spiral into a back and forth contest.
In the fourth quarter, the lead kept on changing between CSDR and AAE. With 2 minutes left in the game, CSDR had a 4 point lead, but unfortunately the Cubs made a turnover which caused AAE to take advantage (foul, basket made) but CSDR was still in the lead by 1 point. The Cubs made yet another turnover at this point, so AAE got the ball back with 14 seconds left. AAE made a terribly crazy basket and this locked in the win for AAE. The final score was 51-48.
Noah Valencia scored 24 points, made 14 rebounds, and had 10 steals. Also contributing for CSDR were Nathaniel Humpal (6 points, 4 rebounds), Christian Jacobs (6 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals), Alan Alcocer (6 points, 1 rebound, 1 block), and Jacob Weiss (4 points, 1 rebound, 1 steal).
“It was an extremely tough loss. We as a team lost together. We did not have a chance to practice yesterday which hurt us but we had to make the best out of it. Remember that we have had only 11 days of practice so far. I have to remind myself that the boys tried, and I am still proud of them. We have to move on to the next game. I know the boys are capable of rebounding from the tough loss,” stated Coach Valencia.
CSD Riverside (1-1) will play in another away game today, Friday December 4, at 4:00 pm vs. Baker.
