This past week the CSDR Cheer Team has been very busy!  When the volleyball and football games were cancelled Wednesday due to the poor air quality attributed to the fires, the cheer team stayed in Riverside and practiced indoors to be ready for their first competition against hearing teams.  While everyone else was relaxing at home on Thursday and Friday, the cheer team was on campus practicing. Despite the fact that Riverside had a power outage on Friday, the team spent the whole day learning the end of dance and putting the competition routine together.

Their hard work paid off!  On Saturday, Oct. 27, the CSDR Cheer Team attended the Sharp International Cheer Competition at Norte Vista High School in Riverside.  In addition, our Elementary Cubbies Cheer Team also competed for the first time in CSDR history in hearing competition.

I am proud to announce that the CSDR Cheer Team and Cubbies Team both won 1st place in their divisions!   The high school team earned 91.25 points out of 100!  Cubbies earned 80.1.  But the most exciting news of all is that CSDR won Best Spirit over all of the hearing teams that were there!  Go Cubs!!

Our Cubs and Cubbies also entered individual contests that were open to anyone who wanted to be involved.  The outcome was awesome!  Open Partner Stunts: Jerome Starr (CSDR graduate ’05, former cheerleader, and assistant elementary cheer coach) won 1st place with Karina Torres.  High School Partner Stunts: 1st place – Louie Barrios and Crystal Hernandez.  Best Toe-Touch Jump: 1st place – Jerome Starr, 2nd place – Louie Barrios, 3rd place – Karina Torres.  Elementary Best Toe-Touch: 2nd place: Jarita Bustamante.  Best Tumbling: 1st place: Louie Barrios, 2nd place (Elementary division): Jarita Bustamante. Best Elementary Stunts: 2nd place – Jalena Cochran, Janelle Coons, Brianna Lesti, Malia Zornoza

After the competition many of the judges and spectators approached me and complimented our team.  When you see these team members be sure to congratulate them for representing CSDR and the Deaf community extremely well:
